Ysgol Gwaun Y Nant and Oak Field Primary Schools

The project at Oak Field Primary and Ysgol Gwaun Y Nant will extend and enhance facilities to support learning in the 21st Century.

With our construction partners, ISG Construction, we are building a new 2 floor school building for Oak Field English medium primary school on the site that it shares with the Welsh medium primary school.

Ysgol Gymraeg Gwaun Y Nant will take over the space previously shared by both schools and undergo a substantial refurbishment .

In November 2014 building work started on the construction of a 210 place primary school including nursery to accommodate Oak Field Primary school on the existing school site in Barry. Oakfield Primary School opened to children in September 2015. Remodelling work has now started at Ysgol Gwaun Y Nant and is due to be completed by November 2015.

Ysgol Gwaun y Nant and Oak Field Primary school currently occupy a single building. Once Oak Field Primary vacates the original building it will be adapted and remodelled to create a 420 place school with nursery to accommodate the increasing demand for Welsh medium education in Barry.

Facilities in the new schools will include:

  • Double height hall at Oak Field
  • Central learning zones on both floors of Oak Field primary school
  • Classrooms positioned around these spaces
  • Refurbished class spaces and resources areas
  • Flexible IT facilities in all classroom and resources spaces for both schools
  • Shared hard and soft surface outdoor learning and play spaces
  • 21st century kitchens in both schools
  • Flexible sports/dining hall spaces in both schools
