Cllr Rowlands, Mayor of Basildon Borough Council, Cllr David Dodds, and Alun Cairns MP joined hundreds of runners including a sizable contingent from Billericay for the inaugural Gavin and Stacey Parkrun.

Cllr Rowlands said: “Initiatives such as Parkrun make exercise enjoyable and are so important to helping people live healthier lives. The Barry Island event in particular is a great example of the power of volunteering to improve local communities.

“Huge credit must go to the organisers of the Barry Island and Billericay events for this weekend. It has not only brought even more people out for a run on a Saturday morning, it has once again brought the first class Barry Island resort to the attention of people all across the country.

“I’d also like to thank the council staff and Park Run UK who helped make the event possible.”

As part of his civic duties Cllr Rowlands oversees the Mayor’s Foundation Grant Fund. The fund offers grants to community groups, the voluntary sector and not for profit organisations within the Vale of Glamorgan that help to support the Council’s vision of 'strong communities with a bright future'.
