It’s UNISON Green Week

UNISON is the UK’s largest union, serving more than 1.3 million members, representing full-time and part-time staff who provide public services.

The union recognises the importance of the green agenda and the urgent impact climate change will have on our working environments, our communities, our families and our global family.

“Tackling climate change can’t wait until a more convenient time – there’s too much at stake for our members, their jobs, their families and the communities we all live in – we have to act now.”
– Christina McAnea, UNISON General Secretary.

You can find out more about UNISON’s green agenda on their website.

At the Vale of Glamorgan Council, we share this commitment through Project Zero, our plan to tackle climate change, cut carbon emissions and work more sustainably. You can explore resources, training and updates via the Project Zero Portal.

How you can get involved in Unison Green Week

Whether you’re a UNISON member or not, we’d love you to pledge one (or more) green actions this week, big or small, and tell us how it went. For example:

  • Walk, wheel or use public transport for a journey
  • Save energy – do a mini audit at home or work or take the stairs instead of the lift
  • Reduce your meat consumption with a meat-free day
  • Cut back on single-use plastics
  • Reduce waste – how few bags can you fill this week
  • Reducing Single-Use Plastics - try and buy products not in plastic containers

Complete the short survey to tell us what you tried and how it went!

2026 will be UNISON’s Year of Green Activity, focusing on climate impacts, fair change and just transition, public transport, extreme heat, water, COP31 and more. Keep an eye on the UNISON Green Activity Events Calendar for updates.
