Traveling Sustainably: A guide for staff
As part of Project Zero, we’re committed to cutting our carbon footprint. By signing up to Level Two of the Healthy Staff Travel Charter, we’re supporting staff to choose healthier, more sustainable ways to travel to and for work.
Our annual staff travel survey shows many colleagues are already choosing sustainable travel, whether regularly or just occasionally. We know busy lives mean it’s not always possible every day, but with over 5,000 employees, even small changes can make a big difference.
We’re lucky to have many green spaces, active travel routes, and the coast on our doorstep - and there’s plenty of support available to help you give sustainable travel a try!
Take a look at the range of initiatives in place to help staff find a sustainable travel option that suits them:

Cycle to Work Scheme: Get a new bike and accessories through salary sacrifice, while saving money on the cost with the Cycle to Work Scheme.
Showers and lockers: As part of our work to achieve a Cycle Friendly Employer Silver Accreditation we installed showers and lockers at the Civic Offices and at the Alps so that staff have the option to freshen up before starting their working day.
Bicycle storage: There is cycle storage in the car park of the Civic Offices and the Alps Offices. If you would like cycle storage at your workplace please contact activetravel@valeofglamorgan.gov.uk.
Route Planning: Check out Traveline route planner or use apps like Google Maps for cycle and walking friendly route options.
Training: Free cycle training is available to staff through our partnership with Road Safety Wales. Email roadsafety@valeofglamorgan.gov.uk to find out more.
Cycle Allowance: Staff can claim 20p per mile (for journeys up to 3 miles each way) on Oracle Fusion.
Brompton bikes: Brompton folding bikes are available for daily hire at Penarth Train Station, Barry Docks Transport Interchange, Barry Train Station, and Llantwit Major Train Station.

MyTravelPass: The Welsh Government scheme offers reduced bus fares for people aged 16–21.
JurnyOn: Staff can now save up to 35% on TfW train tickets with the new JurnyOn app.
Transport for Wales Corporate Season Ticket: An annual ticket valid for 52 weeks at the same cost as 40 weekly tickets.
Interest Free Season ticket loans: Staff can apply for an interest-free loan of up to £1,000 to cover the cost of season tickets, including TfW Corporate Season Tickets.
Route planning: Use Traveline Cymru or apps like Google Maps to plan your journey and check real-time services.
Railcards: A range of national and Transport for Wales railcards are available, including 1/3 off for 16-30 year olds - you can find a full list on the TFW website.

Electric Vehicles: We have electric pool cars available for staff use. If you drive your own EV, chargers are also available at the Civic and Alps offices.
Car Pooling: If you pass a colleague’s area on your way to work, why not share a lift? Car pooling helps reduce costs and cut emissions.
