Shared Lives in the Spotlight on ITV Wales
22 June 2026
Our Shared Lives scheme was placed firmly in the spotlight this week as part of a series of features on adult social care in Wales.
The news report highlighted the impact of the scheme - which helps vulnerable adults to receive support within a safe family environment - and was aired as part of ITV’s Sharp End programme as well as the ITV Wales News at Six.
The Vale of Glamorgan Shared Lives scheme has been established for over 20 years – supporting individuals with varying needs including learning disabilities, physical disabilities, autism, mental health issues and dementia.
The aim for the person being supported is to live their best life, their way, in their own communities whilst also promoting independence and gaining new skills.
Shared Lives carer Bernie Coppinger opened her home to the ITV cameras where she talked about her time with Rosie Shale, one of the individuals who receives respite care at Bernie’s home in Barry.
Our Shared Lives Team Manager Paul Marchant also took part in the broadcast where he shared insight into how the scheme operates, whilst highlighting the vital role carers play in supporting people to live independently and remain connected to their communities.
Speaking to reporter Megan Boot, Paul said: “The Shared Lives Scheme involves 85 carers across the Vale of Glamorgan and Bridgend, helping 47 individuals living in households and 25 in respite care, with individuals referred through social services teams.
“Anyone could become a carer, there are no qualifications. Anybody who shares the same values, maybe they've got the right compassion and commitment, can become a carer if they've got their own home and they've got a spare room in their house as well.”
