July is Disability Pride Month

Disability Pride FlagThis is the Disability Pride Flag, created by Ann Magill, a disabled woman.

  • The black background represents protest in the community as well as mourning for disabled people who have been subject to ableist violence

  • The five colours represent the variety of needs and experiences across the range of disabilities

  • The band of parallel stripes represent the barriers faced by disabled people

  • The flag was redesigned in 2021 with more subdued tones to allow the flag to be more accessible and inclusive

Disability Pride Month is a way of celebrating diversity and difference among the disabled community, embracing all disabilities and experiences.

For many people, Disability Pride Month is a way of spotlighting the barriers and discrimination faced by disabled people.

We are working to set up a staff disability network. We met again in July to discuss moving forward with the group – the name, terms of reference, and structure. For more information about the group, please contact Colin Davies.

The Council work extremely hard to ensure that we offer a safe, enjoyable, and inclusive place for people to work and to ensure that the Vale of Glamorgan area is a positive and nurturing environment therein.

If you are concerned about discrimination or harassment, or want more information about how to report it, please refer to the Vale of Glamorgan Council’s grievance policy
