Farewell and Happy Retirement to Debbie Lewis

04 August 2025

After nearly 30 years of dedicated service to the Vale Council, we bid a fond farewell to Debbie Lewis as she begins her well-earned retirement.

Debbie LewisFor many, Palmerston Adult Learning Centre and Adult Community Learning (ACL) are synonymous with Debbie - her presence, passion, and leadership have been at the heart of it all.

Debbie began her journey in April 1996, running the crèche in Cadoxton House and later establishing a Breakfast and After School Club for the local community. Her impact was immediate and lasting - even today, former pupils, now adults with families of their own, stop to share fond memories. One such story includes Peter Beckett, now a tutor, who attended Debbie’s crèche as a child.

Her passion for learning blossomed as she transitioned into Playwork, where she began her own lifelong learning journey. Debbie became a tutor herself and played a key role in piloting the OCN qualifications for Adult Education. In 2002, she became the Adult Education Officer at Palmerston Centre, where her influence grew even stronger.

Debbie’s unwavering commitment to learners, tutors, and colleagues has shaped countless educational journeys. Her warm welcome and tireless support have made Palmerston a beacon of opportunity and inclusion.

Mark Davies, Operational Manager for Partnerships and Community, shared: “Following Phil Southard’s departure, Deb stayed on to steady the ship and support the team through a difficult time. Her drive and energy have continued to move the service forward. She not only inducted and supported me with her vast knowledge and experience, but also worked tirelessly to ensure her successor is well-prepared. She leaves behind a service to be proud of, and I wish her all the best.”

Among her many accolades, Debbie Lewis was a key contributor to the Cardiff and Vale Learning Partnerships’ EXCELLENT Estyn Inspection in 2022, and was named the Learning and Skills Directorate Employee of the Year in 2019. Debbie’s legacy is one of compassion, dedication, and transformation - she leaves behind not just a role, but a community that has been deeply enriched by her presence.

Thank you, Debbie - for everything. Enjoy your retirement!
