Vale Well-being and Prevention Work Featured by National Think Tank

22 December 2025

New Local LogoTo mark the 10th anniversary of the Well-being of Future Generations Wales Act, our Chief Executive Rob Thomas and Director of Corporate Resources Tom Bowring have co-written an article for New Local.

The article focuses on our prevention work and how initiatives such as our house-building programme and fitness sessions aimed at older residents help address challenges earlier, reduce long-term demand on services and help to create more resilient communities.

New Local is an independent UK think tank and network of councils focused on transforming public services by strengthening community power.

It supports local authorities to work differently with residents, communities and partners, sharing power, resources and decision-making to improve outcomes and build stronger places.

Our membership of New Local directly supports our Vale 2030 ambitions by strengthening our ability to work with communities, not just for them.

It aligns closely with our approach of being open, collaborative, ambitious and community-focused whilst helping staff to develop the skills, confidence and insight needed to deliver more inclusive, preventative and place-shaped services.

As part of the New Local Network, Vale staff can access:

  • Members-only online hub with exclusive briefings, insights and practical resources
  • Events, workshops and peer-learning sessions on place-based working, prevention, participation and service reform
  • Research, reports and thought leadership exploring innovative approaches to public service design and delivery
  • Networks and connections with officers and leaders from councils across the UK to share learning and practice
  • Discounted support and consultancy from New Local on commissioned research and transformation work
