VE Day

Details on how we will be marking the 80th anniversary of VE Day between 5 - 8 May

Next week we will commemorate the 80th anniversary of Victory in Europe (VE) Day, which marks the end of the second world war in Europe.

Looking back at VE Day celebrations 80 years ago we came across this image from a street party in Grove Place in Penarth, thanks to our libraries archive collection. Across the country, street parties will be held on Monday 5 May to celebrate this historic day.

On Thursday 8 May, the Royal British Legion will be hosting a wreath-laying service at the cenotaph at the Memorial Hall in Barry at 11am. The Mayor, Leader and Chief Executive will all attend and pay their respects. Colleagues are welcome to attend this ceremony.

Finally, we will be observing a national two-minute silence at 12pm on Thursday 8 May. We invite all colleagues to join us in this moment of reflection and remembrance. If you are working at the Civic Offices, you're welcome to gather at the forecourt to observe this silence.
