Reminder from IT about Work Devices
20 April 2026
We have recently dealt with a number of cyber security incidents and near misses. While these were quickly identified and mitigated, they are a reminder of the importance of good cyber security practice and staff vigilance.
Please remember the following:
- There is no personal use of Vale computers and devices allowed. They must be used only for work and official Council business.
- Always lock your screen when you step away. If you leave your computer unlocked, you are responsible for anything done on it by someone else.
- Do not share, write down, or record any log on details, including network passwords or BitLocker codes, and do not stick password reminders to your computer using post it notes or similar.
- Never reuse passwords (don’t use the same password for different things), and never use your Vale log on password anywhere else. Using a reputable password manager at home is strongly recommended.
- Be alert to phishing emails. Do not click links or open attachments out of curiosity, and never enter your log on details via a link in an external email.
- Treat all emails with caution, even from trusted third parties.
- Report anything suspicious to the IT Service Desk.
Following these simple steps helps keep you safe at work and at home, and helps protect the Council.
