Library teams help bring blood pressure monitor loan scheme to communities across the Vale
Our Library service has been working with the Cardiff and Vale Local Public Health Team, and Cardiff and Vale University Health Board to make blood pressure monitors available to borrow from Penarth, Barry, Cowbridge and Llantwit Major libraries.
Thanks to the new scheme, residents can now borrow a clinically validated blood pressure monitor just like they would a book or other library item, making it easier to keep an eye on their health from home.
The project links closely to the Council’s Vale 2030 Corporate Plan, which sets out our vision of Strong Communities with a Bright Future. One of the key objectives is ‘Supporting and protecting those who need us’, making sure residents who need extra help can access it, working across services and with partners to support vulnerable people and help prevent problems before they reach crisis point.
By bringing together trusted community spaces and health expertise, the partnership is helping to reduce health inequalities and remove cost barriers that can stop people monitoring their blood pressure.
High blood pressure affects around one in three adults in the UK, and many people don’t realise they have it. If it’s not treated, it can lead to serious health conditions including stroke, heart disease, kidney disease and more. Monitoring blood pressure at home can help people spot issues earlier and make positive lifestyle changes, such as being more active, eating well, maintaining a healthy weight, stopping smoking or taking medication if needed.
Buying a monitor isn’t always affordable, which is where libraries are stepping in. British and Irish Hypertension Society–validated monitors are now available to borrow for three-week periods. Residents can borrow a monitor with a library card, and anyone who isn’t already a member can sign up at their local library or hub.
Each loan comes with a simple booklet explaining:
- Why blood pressure monitoring matters
- What can cause high blood pressure
- How to use the monitor correctly
- How to record readings
- What to do if they’re worried about their results
This is another great example of how our libraries are about much more than books. They’re welcoming, accessible spaces that support residents’ wellbeing in all sorts of practical ways!
