Plans for Indoor Market at Former Wilko Building Move Ahead

06 November 2026

Exciting plans to bring a new indoor market to Barry’s former Wilko building are moving ahead, supporting the Council’s efforts to boost Holton Road, bring more people into the town centre and encourage new investment.

This follows our recent half-term pop-up events, which attracted more than 1,000 visitors across the week through a variety of activities.

wilko slider-5To progress these plans, we have now appointed Next Phase Projects to help develop proposals for the new indoor market on the ground floor, alongside market designers Greig + Stephenson who will help turn those plans into a reality.

With a track record of developing successful markets across the nation, they're well placed to help bring our plans to life.

As market specialists, they will work closely with the Council, local businesses and potential traders to help develop a successful and sustainable market. This will inform a detailed market design, operating model and business case.

The project – which is being funded with support from the Welsh Government - forms a key part of the Council's wider plans for the prominent town centre site, which was finally acquired in early 2026.

While the ground floor is being developed as a potential market space, options for the upper floors continue to be considered.
