60th Anniversary of the Aberfan Disaster

12 October 2026

On Wednesday 21 October, we will mark 60 years since the Aberfan disaster.

As a Council, we will be joining a nationwide minute’s silence at 9.15am to remember the 144 people who lost their lives in the tragedy, including 116 children.

The minute’s silence will begin with the sounding of the fire alarm at the Civic Offices.

Colleagues are invited to join the minute’s silence wherever they may be at that time — whether at their desks, elsewhere in their workplace, working remotely, or out in the community.

It will be an opportunity for all to pause and reflect as we remember those who lost their lives in this tragic event in our nation’s history.
