Creating a Safer and More Respectful Council Workplace
Health and safety are at the heart of everything we do. Whether it's preventing injuries, protecting our buildings, or supporting our people, we all have a role to play in making our council a safer place to work and serve the public.
Every year, trips and falls caused by cluttered spaces or unsafe practices at height result in serious injuries across the UK. These incidents are often avoidable. By staying alert to risks, keeping walkways clear, and using proper equipment when working at height, we can prevent harm before it happens.
Just as physical safety matters, so does emotional wellbeing. Our frontline staff deserve to carry out their duties free from abuse or intimidation. We operate a zero-tolerance policy towards any kind of verbal or physical abuse, and we stand firmly in support of colleagues who experience it. Everyone has the right to feel safe and respected at work.
Fire safety, too, must never be overlooked. Building managers have a legal and moral duty to stay compliant with fire regulations, but everyone can contribute by being aware of evacuation routes, maintaining clear exits, and reporting fire hazards. Compliance isn't just about paperwork — it’s about protecting lives and livelihoods.
This hub brings together the information, tools, and reporting systems you need to help keep our council safe, respectful, and resilient. Because safety isn’t someone else’s job — it’s everyone’s responsibility.
