Chief Executive pays tribute to retiring Council stalwart

Chief Executive Rob Thomas paid a heartfelt tribute to Karen Bowen on her last day in work.
The Principle Democratic and Scrutiny Officer has retired after more than 43 years in Local Government.
Karen started her career at Mid Glamorgan Council in 1981 as a Clerical/Admin Officer in the Social Services department.
She moved over to Bridgend Council following Local Government Reorganisation 15 years later and went on to work as Mayoral Secretary between 1997 and 2003.
Karen was appointment to the role of Democratic Services Officer at the Vale of Glamorgan Council in 2003, taking on her final role in July 2018.
She also took up Operational Management duties for Democratic Services for eight months last year whilst recruitment for the position took place.
Addressing Karen at an event in the Civic Offices, Rob said: “Where to start? Well, it’s fitting that we are having this homage in the Council Chamber – the seat of power in the Vale, the setting where key decisions are made – something that you have been at the core of supporting and facilitating for the last 22 years. And you have done so brilliantly.
“You have of course done many other things as part of your roles with the Council. You have always been very eager to support and help out wherever possible whether this be getting involved in mayor events and key commemorations and the twinning visits during their heyday. More recently, you have worked really hard to get all the hybrid systems up and running as part of the move towards multi-location meetings and I am really grateful to the effort you and other colleagues have put into this to get us to a decent position.
“In all my time with the Vale Council I have known you to be steadfast in your support of this Council. There is no doubt that Karen will be missed by all those who have worked with her over the years.
“Here's to a happy and healthy, well–earned retirement.
“Diolch Karen from me personally and on behalf of the organisation for your dedication and commitment – it is greatly appreciated.”
As she prepared to hang up her work lanyard for the final time, Karen said: "Thank you all for my lovely send off for my retirement.
"I wish you all the best for the future and what an amazing Council to work for its been a pleasure and a privilege to have worked with you all."
