End of Week Message from Lance
06 November 2026
Hi everyone,
One of the things that continues to inspire me about working in social services is the way colleagues find new and exciting ways to make a positive difference to people's lives.
This week's stories provide some wonderful examples of this work that demonstrate how we support and protect those who need us.
Last month, social care leaders, practitioners and partners from across Wales came together in Cardiff for the National Social Care Conference. It was a great opportunity to celebrate the work taking place in the sector and share ideas about how we continue to move forward in an ever-evolving landscape.
I am particularly proud of the contribution made by Vale colleagues, who really demonstrated how the work we are doing is at the cutting edge of social care.
Linda Woodley and Natalie Eddins, working in partnership with Innovate Trust, led an excellent workshop exploring engagement and co-production. They showcased the work of our citizen panel, giving those involved the opportunity to share their experiences and demonstrate the value of being genuinely listened to and having a meaningful say in decisions that affect them.
More broadly, our partnership with Innovate Trust is also helping us explore how innovative technology can open up new opportunities for residents with sensory impairments and learning disabilities. Combining their expertise and the insights of our social care teams is bringing in emerging technologies to make a tangible difference in the lives of those we support.
We also saw social workers Jayne Case and Sian Palmer in Adult Services take part in a panel discussion about the introduction of AI in Social Care. Jayne and Sian have both been involved in the rollout of new AI transcription software for social care colleagues, which aims to help reduce the time spent on admin tasks and case notes that will then allow more time for focusing on what matters most – helping people.
They confidently responded to questions and shared their professional expertise in an area that will undoubtedly continue to shape our sector.
These contributions demonstrate the importance of being open to new ideas, sharing our learning and ensuring that innovation always has people and their experiences at its heart.
There was another Vale contribution at the conference that deserves a special mention, and this one came with a rather different tempo!
Following last year's wonderful performance at the National Social Care Conference, the Hope 4 Change therapeutic community band was invited back to perform at this year's evening event – and they certainly didn't disappoint!
Hope 4 Change is a collaborative partnership between our Community Mental Health Support Team and Breathe Creative CIC, and the band once again demonstrated the power of music in bringing people together.
Ross, Haydn, Anthony, Rhys and Jen, supported by Mike from Breathe Creative CIC, delivered an hour-long set that brought the evening to life, had the audience on their feet and provided a fantastic finale. There was plenty of energy and some brilliant performances which resulted in a very appreciative crowd!
Behind the music, however, is something even more powerful at play.
Through collaborative songwriting and performance, Hope 4 Change provides a supportive space for people experiencing mental ill health to express themselves, build confidence and connect with others. The progress made by band members, supported by Breathe Creative and Geri and Gareth from Vale Locality Mental Health Team, is a wonderful example of how creativity can support recovery and wellbeing.
Of course, understanding people's experiences and making a difference doesn't always require major changes or new initiatives. Sometimes it's about the everyday connections we build with those we support to build better understanding, and we've recently received some wonderful feedback that demonstrates just how important these relationships can be.
Two parents who have worked with Damion Knott, one of our Flying Start Parent Support Workers, have taken the time to share their experiences of the support they received.
One parent described Damion as “an absolute star” - highlighting how he consistently delivered what he promised and went above and beyond. Another shared how he supported her and her daughter through a particularly difficult period of homelessness, helping them navigate appointments and council processes and keeping them informed throughout. They are now in temporary accommodation, which is an important step forward.
Both parents spoke so positively about the difference Damion had made. His commitment reflects the care and compassion shown by colleagues across the Council every day, and I'm incredibly grateful to everyone who goes above and beyond to make a difference to the lives of others, particularly when people are facing challenging circumstances.
Finally, in the same spirit of making a difference, I wanted to remind you all that our annual Santa’s Cause initiative is back for 2026!
Since launching in 2022, the generosity of colleagues has helped provide thousands of gifts for children supported by our Social Services teams, ensuring they have something special to open on Christmas Day.
There are lots of ways to get involved, whether through financial donations, buying a gift from the Christmas wish list, donating suitable items for our fundraising raffles or contributing wrapping paper and gift bags. Donations can be dropped off at Civic Offices reception.
You can also join us for the Santa's Cause Fun Run on Saturday 28 November at 11am, starting at Barry Island Eastern Shelter. There's a 2.5k or 5k option, fancy dress is encouraged and all abilities are welcome! It’s looking to be a much bigger event this year with growing interest from our communities.
As I reflect on this week’s update, I'm in awe of the many ways colleagues across our services continue to challenge themselves, embrace new ideas and work alongside others to make a positive difference. Thank you all for your hard work, and your continued care and commitment to supporting and protecting those who need us.
For those of you not working over the weekend, I hope you enjoy a well-deserved and restful break.
Thanks,
Lance
