A to Z of Recycling

If you are unsure of what household waste can and cannot be recycled, then why not use our handy A to Z guide

 

This handy guide lets you know which items are currently recyclable in the Vale, whether they can be collected weekly or whether you would need to take them to our household waste recycling centres in Barry or Llandow.

 


Letter A

Aerosol cans - Kerbside recycling. Please ensure they are empty, remove the lid and add this to your container separately

Air conditioning appliances - Llandow and Barry recycling centres or ring and request for our bulky household collection service

Aluminium cans - kerbside recycling; ensure they're clean and crushed to save space

Aluminium foil - kerbside recycling; ensure it is clean of food or chemicals

Ammunition and weapons - Contact your local police station

Apple cores - add to your food caddy to be recycled

Answering machine - Llandow and Barry recycling centres

Asbestos - please contact us to ensure it's disposed of safely

Autumn leaves  - please either home compost or add to your kerbside collection

 

Letter B

Baby food jars - unscrew the metal lid, rinse; place both items in your box

Baked beans - add to your food caddy to be recycled

Balloons - these cannot be recycled

Banana skins - add to your food caddy to be recycled

Batteries - car/household batteries can be taken to Llandow or Barry recycling sites.

Don't forget most electrical stores at point of purchase will have a recycling facility. Please do not place car batteries out for collection in your black bag as it will not be collected.

Beans - add to your food caddy to be recycled

Beer bottles - kerbside recycling

Belts - Llandow and Barry recycling centres or recycling banks

Bikes - Please take old bikes to Llandow and Barry recycling banks

Biscuit tins - please add to your weekly kerbside collection box

Biscuits - add to your food caddy to be recycled

Body care appliances - Llandow and Barry recycling centres

Books - recycling banks or take them to a charity shop/reuse them where you can

Bones (meat or fish) - add to your food caddy to be recycled

Bowls - broken or cracked items may be included in the hardcore containers at recycling centres in Llandow or Barry

Bread - add to your food caddy to be recycled

Bread bags - place them in your weekly co-mingled recycling collection box

Bric-a-brac - consider a car boot sale or donate to a charity shop

Butter and margarine tubs - add them to your weekly co-mingled recycling collection

 

Letter C

Calculator (electrical) - Llandow and Barry recycling centres

Cake - add to your food caddy to be recycled

Can opener - Llandow and Barry recycling centres

Cardboard - kerbside recycling, place in the base of your container to ensure quality

Cans - kerbside recycling

Cards - kerbside recycling (please remove any non-card items such as glitter, glue or ribbons; although most of these could be reused).

Carpet - You can either take it directly to one of our Recycling Centres at Atlantic Trading Estate in Barry or our site in Llandow. Alternatively you can contact us and book a bulky waste collection to have the carpet collected at the kerbside

Carrier bags - these should be reused before being recycled

Carrot tops - add to your food caddy to be recycled

Cartons - see Tetra Pak; kerbside recycling, please rinse items

Cartridges - send them to charity, some will collect or offer free postage

Catalogues - can be placed in your kerbside recycling container

Cathode ray tubes - Llandow and Barry recycling centres

CDs - the plastic cover can be recycled kerbside. Take the actual CD to your local charity shop, sell it at a car boot sale or use it as a bird scarer in gardens

Cellophane - kerbside recycling

Cereal boxes - separate the plastic bag from the box and place both items kerbside

China - broken or cracked items may be included in the hardcore containers at recycling centres in Llandow or Barry

Cheese - add to your food caddy to be recycled

Chemicals, poisons and pesticides - Please contact a specialist private company

Christmas trees - please use our free January kerbside collections, be sure to remove all decorations beforehand.

Cheese packaging - this is mainly made from plastic or card, foil can be added if clean of food. Place all components in your weekly collection for co-mingled recycling

Cling film - Llandow and Barry recycling centres, recycling banks or kerbside recycling

Clock (electrical) - Llandow and Barry recycling centres

Clothes - Llandow and Barry recycling centres, recycling banks, or your local charity shop

Coffee grounds - add to your food caddy to be recycled

Coffee jars - place both the lid and jar separately in your kerbside recycling container

Coffee machine (electrical) - Llandow and Barry recycling centres

Computer monitor - Llandow and Barry recycling centres

Cooked food - add to your food caddy to be recycled

Cooking oil - Llandow and Barry recycling centres

Cooker - Llandow and Barry recycling centres

Couscous - add to your food caddy to be recycled

Cups - broken or cracked items may be included in the hardcore containers at recycling centres in Llandow or Barry

 

Letter D

Dairy products (non-liquid) - add to your food caddy to be recycled

Dishwasher - Llandow and Barry recycling centres or ring and request

DIY tools (electrical) - Llandow and Barry recycling centres

Duvets - can't be recycled, but often animal shelter charitable organisations will be glad of them for bedding

DVD player - Llandow and Barry recycling centres

 

Letter E

Egg boxes - these are usually plastic or cardboard, as long as it is not polystyrene add it to your kerbside container

Egg shells - add to your food caddy to be recycled

Electric hot plate - Llandow and Barry recycling centres

Electrical items - Llandow and Barry recycling centres/ Bulky household waste collections. Please do not place electrical items in your black bag as it won't be collected.

Electric stove - Llandow and Barry recycling centres / Bulky household waste collections

Envelopes - we accept this is labour intensive, but if you have time remove the gum and any windows, the paper can then be added kerbside

EPNS (Electro plated nickel silver)

 

Letter F

Fabric softener bottles - rinse out and recycle in your weekly co-mingled collection

Fan (electric) - Llandow and Barry recycling centres / Bulky household waste collections ring and request

Fax machine - Llandow and Barry recycling centres

Fish (bones and skin) - add to your food caddy to be recycled

Flour packaging - once empty add to your co-mingled collection

Fluorescent tubes - Llandow and Barry recycling centres

Flowers (dead)  - please either home compost or add to your kerbside collection

Fridge/freezer - Llandow and Barry recycling centres / ring and request Bulky household waste collections (Please ensure all food is removed from the unit before collection)

Fryer - Llandow and Barry recycling centres

Food oil - Llandow and Barry recycling centres

Foil - kerbside recycling. Please ensure it's not contaminated with food/drink/chemicals

Fruit - add to your food caddy to be recycled

Furniture polish cans - once drained add to your co-mingled weekly recycling collection

 

Letter G

Gas cylinders - Return safely to your retailer for refilling

Gas discharge lamps - Llandow and Barry recycling centres

Games console - Llandow and Barry recycling centres

Garden furniture - Llandow and Barry recycling centres

Gas bottles - Llandow and Barry recycling centres

Gift wrap - Why not re-use this? Remove tape and place it kerbside

Glass bottles - kerbside recycling

Grass cuttings - please either home compost or add to your kerbside collection

Guinea pig hay/sawdust (used) fine to add to your garden waste collection, as long as it is not too heavy to lift.

 

Letter H

Hairdryers - Llandow and Barry recycling centres

Hair conditioner and shampoo bottles - please rinse and add to your weekly collection

Hair spray cans - once empty, add to your kerbside recycling collection

Hamster hay/sawdust (used) fine to add to your garden waste collection, as long as it is not too heavy to lift.

Handheld video game console - Llandow and Barry recycling centres

Handbags - Llandow and Barry recycling centres or recycling banks, reuse if you can

Hardcore -  Llandow and Barry recycling centres (you need a permit if taking a vehicle larger than a car)

Hi-fi - Llandow and Barry recycling centres

 

Letter I
Inkjet cartridges - help charities and recycle these through them

Iron - Llandow and Barry recycling centres

I.T. equipment (electrical) - Llandow and Barry recycling centres

Incandescent light bulbs - Please don't place light bulbs in your black bag waste without wrapping - health and safety is important

 

Letter J

Japanese knotweed -Please contact Natural Resources Wales for advice on 0300 065 3000 or by e mail enquiries@naturalresourceswales.gov.uk

Jars - kerbside recycling

Juice cartons - recycle in your weekly co-mingled collections

Junk mail - can be placed in kerbside recycling, You can register to

Jugs - broken or cracked items may be included in the hardcore containers at recycling centres in Llandow or Barry

 

Letter K

Kitchen knives - Llandow and Barry recycling centres (please inform the representative on site on arrival), or alternatively wrap it/them really well in newspaper, plastics or similar, then tape it up and place it in the middle of your black bag, so no harm can come to others.

Kerbside boxes - Llandow and Barry recycling centres

Keyboards - Llandow and Barry recycling centres

Kitchen roll cardboard tube - add to your weekly kerbside co-mingled collection

 

Letter L

Laptops - Llandow and Barry recycling centres (please remove all data from hard drive)

Leaves -  home compost or add to your kerbside garden waste collection

Leftover plate scrapings - add to your food caddy to be recycled

Light bulbs - Please don't place light bulbs in your black bag waste without wrapping - health & safety is important

Low energy light bulbs/fluorescent tubes - Llandow or Barry recycling centres.

 

Letter M

Magazines - kerbside recycling (staples do not need to be removed)

Margarine and butter tubs - add to your weekly co-mingled recycling collection

Medicine bottles - add to your weekly kerbside co-mingled collection

Medical waste - This is classed as clinical waste and will be disposed of via the Health Board

Microwaves - Llandow and Barry recycling centres

Milk cartons and bottles - recycle in your weekly co-mingled collection

Mobile phones - lots of charities accept these or take to Llandow/Barry recycling sites

Motor oil - Llandow/Barry recycling centres, most servicing garages should also accept

Mugs - broken or cracked items may be included in the hardcore containers at recycling centres in Llandow or Barry

Mussel shells - add to your food caddy to be recycled

 

Letter N
Newspapers - kerbside recycling. They can also be reused, e.g. for pet cages and window cleaning

 

Letter O

Office accessories - such as trays, rulers, etc. Hard plastic - Llandow and Barry

Oranges - in your food caddy / home composting

Ovenware (such as heavy duty glassware or ceramic items) broken or cracked items may be included in the hardcore containers at recycling centres in Llandow or Barry

 

LetterP

Paint - Can be recycled at Llandow and Barry recycling centres. Please do not place any unused paint in with your black bag as it won't be collected

Paper - kerbside recycling (staples do not need to be removed, they are extracted at processing plant)

Pasta - add to your food caddy to be recycled

Pastries - add to your food caddy to be recycled

PC - Llandow and Barry recycling centres (please remove all data from hard drive)

Pet food pouches - empty, rinse and pop in your co-mingled recycling box

Petrol/Diesel - This is a fire risk so should be used and not stored.

Photographs - these cannot currently be recycled

Pineapple skins/leaves - add to your food caddy to be recycled

Plants (dead) - please either home compost or add to your kerbside garden waste collection

Plant pots - Llandow and Barry recycling centres

Plastics - kerbside recycling or take to recycling centre; .

Plates - broken or cracked items may be included in the hardcore containers at recycling centres in Llandow or Barry

Polystyrene - cannot currently be recycled, but it's useful for gardeners to reuse to help soil drainage in hanging baskets and pots

Porcelain - broken or cracked items may be included in the hardcore containers at recycling centres in Llandow or Barry

Post-it notes - kerbside recycling (please remove gum)

Potato peelings - add to your food caddy to be recycled

Pyrex - broken or cracked items may be included in the hardcore containers at recycling centres in Llandow or Barry

 

Letter R

Rabbit hay/sawdust (used) fine to add to your garden waste collection, as long as it is not too heavy to lift.

Radiators (electric) - Llandow and Barry recycling centres / ring and request Bulky household waste collections

Radios - Llandow and Barry recycling centres

Razors - for health and safety reasons, place these in your general waste with the plastic safety guard on. If it is safe, remove the heads and place the plastic handle in kerbside recycling

Rice - add to your food caddy to be recycled

Roast chicken carcass - add to your food caddy to be recycled

Rubble - Llandow and Barry recycling centres. Please approach a member of staff for assistance for any heavy loads. Please do not put rubble out for collection with your black bag as it will not be collected.

 

Letter S

Sandwich bags - reuse as far as you can, then add to your kerbside recycling container

Sauce bottles - co-mingled weekly collection

Saucers - broken or cracked items may be included in the hardcore containers at recycling centres in Llandow or Barry

Scales (electrical)   - Llandow and Barry recycling centres

Scissors - Llandow and Barry recycling centres

Sewing machines - Llandow and Barry recycling centres

Shavers - Llandow and Barry recycling centres

Shoes - recycling banks or your local charity shop

Shrub cuttings -  home compost or add to your kerbside garden waste collection

Smoothie and soup cartons - rinse and add to your kerbside container

Stainless steel - Llandow and Barry recycling centres

Stock cube boxes - weekly co-mingled recycling

 

Letter T

Tea bags - add to your food caddy to be recycled

Telephones - Llandow and Barry recycling centres

Televisions - Llandow and Barry recycling centres / ring and request Bulky household waste collections

Thermostats - Llandow and Barry recycling centres

Tetra Pak - recycling banks, Llandow and Barry recycling centres, or your weekly kerbside recycling collection. Typically these include soup, pet food pouches and juice cartons

Textiles - Llandow and Barry recycling centres or recycling banks

Tin openers - Llandow and Barry recycling centres

Toasters - Llandow and Barry recycling centres

Toilet roll centre - add as part of card to your weekly co-mingled collection

Toothbrush (electrical) - Llandow and Barry recycling centres

Toner cartridges - these can often be collected for charity

Toy packaging - mostly this is card, paper or plastic, all these items can be added to your weekly kerbside collection.  The exception is polystyrene (see 'P')

Toys - Llandow and Barry recycling centres, if they can't be reused

Tumble dryers - Llandow and Barry recycling centres or ring and request Bulky household waste collections

Typewriters - Llandow and Barry recycling centres

Tyres - Llandow and Barry recycling centres

 

Letter U

Umbrellas - these can't be recycled, reuse/ donate to a charity instead

Uncooked food - add to your food caddy to be recycled

Upvc windows - Llandow and Barry recycling centres

 

Letter V

Vacuum cleaner - Llandow and Barry recycling centres

Vegetables - add to your food caddy to be recycled

Video camera - Llandow and Barry recycling centres

Video games - Llandow and Barry recycling centres

 

Letter W

Wallpaper - add to your co-mingled collection. Don't forget unused rolls make great drawer liners

Washing powder boxes - kerbside recycling

Washing machine - Llandow and Barry recycling centres / ring and request for Bulky household waste collections

Water bottles - ideally reuse these as much as you can, then place them in your co-mingled recycling collection

Weeds (NOT invasive ones such as knotweed) - home compost or add to your kerbside garden waste collection

Wood Llandow and Barry recycling centres. Please do not place wood in your black bag as it will not be collected

Wrapping Paper - can be placed in kerbside recycling; remove any tape, ribbon or tags

 

Letter Y
Yellow Pages - please recycle through your weekly kerbside co-mingled collection
