The Vale has a number of Nursery, Infant, Junior, Primary, Secondary Schools and a 3-19 School, including Welsh-medium Schools and a Special School.


Six of these are Welsh-medium primary schools. Nursery provision is also available at our 36 units attached to infant and primary schools, one is a 3-19 Welsh-medium school and there are also 15 Special Educational Needs units attached to mainstream schools.


The Council is responsible for coordinating the admission arrangements for Community and Voluntary Controlled Schools, whilst the governing bodies are responsible for the Foundation and Voluntary Aided sector.

Schools are classified as Community, Foundation, Voluntary Controlled and Voluntary Aided. Denominational education is provided at 13 primary age schools comprising of 10 Church in Wales primary schools, one Catholic primary school, one Catholic infant school and one Catholic junior school.


Catholic secondary provision is available at St Richard Gwyn Catholic High School. There is no Church in Wales Secondary School in the Vale but parents wishing for this type of education are able to access the Bishop of Llandaff Church in Wales secondary school under arrangements agreed by Cardiff and the Vale authority.
