bags of helpTesco teamed up with Groundwork to launch its community funding scheme, which sees grants of £4,000, £2,000 and £1,000 raised from carrier bag sales in Tesco stores awarded to local community projects.

Ty Dyfan is fundraising to purchase a 'Magic Table' ('Tovertafel') for the residential home. The magic table is an interactive projector which motivates people to participate in games that stimulate physical and social activity.

Numerous games, consisting of interactive light animations that react to hand and arm movements, are projected on a table and it is proven the games enhance the wellbeing of people who live with dementia. The cost of a Tovertafel is approximately £6,000.

Operational Manager of Residential Services and Compliance for the Vale of Glamorgan Council, Marijke Jenkins, said: “We are very grateful that our application to the Tesco Bags of Help Grant Scheme has been successful, and hope that people will support us by considering us when fundraising and when visiting the Tesco stores during January and February. On behalf of Ty Dyfan residents, thank you very much.”

Voting is open in all Tesco stores in Barry during January and February, and customers will cast their vote using a token given to them at the check-out in store each time they shop.

Alec Brown, Head of Community at Tesco, said: “Bags of Help has been a fantastic success and we’ve been overwhelmed by the response from customers. It’s such a special scheme because it’s local people who decide how the money will be spent in their community. There are some fantastic projects on the shortlists and we can’t wait to see these come to life in hundreds of communities.”

The project with the highest number of votes will receive £4,000, the second placed project £2,000 (or the amount that was requested up to this value), and the third placed project £1,000.

The following is the list of stores where customers can take part in voting:
