Sandbox Percussion PicYear 5 students played alongside the New-York quartet, Sandbox Percussion, using an assortment of unconventional instruments, including plant pots, marimbas, wine glasses and rooks – an electronic instrument which uses infrared sensors to interpret hand movement.

The specially curated performance was part of the Vale of Glamorgan Festival’s 50th Anniversary Celebration.

It took a special look at emerging music and living composers, designed to introduce Key Stage 2 pupils to ‘a new kind of sound world.’

It was presented by composer and music education animateur, Helen Woods.

St Andrews WorkshopThe children performed songs composed by themselves in a workshop run earlier in the month by Helen and with students from the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama.

Lis Burnett, Cabinet Member for Education and Regeneration said: “This was a unique opportunity for the Vale’s pupils to get involved with the arts and to try their hand at something new. We hope to see more initiatives like this in the future.”

Both the workshop and concert were run in partnership with Arts Active, with support from Arts Council Wales, the Vale of Glamorgan Council’s Arts Development Services, and Tŷ Cerdd.
