As well as leading to feelings of isolation, more time spent at home during the pandemic can mean increased household bills.

But those over 50 are often unaware that they may be eligible for a range of discounts and financial privileges and such entitlements often go unclaimed.

Together, the Council and Forum are looking to publicise the wide variety of financial advantages available to this group so more get what they’re entitled to.

Examples of the entitlements on offer include:

•         Pension credits and boosts - a benefit for people over State Pension age that tops up income.

•         Council Tax reduction - this may be a total or partial discount depending on circumstances.

•         Housing benefit – support to help pay rent.

•         Attendance allowance – available for older people who may need extra help to stay independent at home.

•         Carers allowance – a benefit for those who are involved in caring for someone else.

•         Heating Benefits – a winter fuel payment to help pay bills.

Cllr Ben Gray, Vale of Glamorgan Council Cabinet Member for Social Care and Health, said: “The last few months have been a testing time for everyone, with many residents facing money problems because of the coronavirus pandemic.

“Like other residents, older people can be impacted financially by the changes to everyday life. However, there are a number of financial entitlements available to this group, depending on their circumstances, to help with the cost of living.

“We offer a Council Tax reduction in certain instances, while it may also be possible to boost your pension or receive an extra allowance if a carer. Many other services are also available for free or at a discounted rate to those over 50.

“It’s important we make people aware of exactly what they’re entitled to so no-one misses out.”

Lynda Wallis, Executive Chair of the Vale 50+ Strategy Forum, said: “Older people have been severely affected by the Covid -19 virus but there could be some help available on the financial side for many of the over 50s.

“Millions of pounds worth of pension credit goes unclaimed because people are not aware they are entitled to it. A phone call to enquire could make a great difference to your income.”
