Though they remain closed for browsing or use of ICT facilities, libraries in Barry, Penarth and Cowbridge will be open for this particular service from 10.00am to 1.00pm and 2.00pm to 4.00pm Monday to Friday, with Llantwit Major operating in the same way from 1.00pm to 4.00pm.

A maximum of five titles can be requested remotely using the online catalogue and a collection slot can be booked once an email confirming the books are ready has been received. While this system is in operation there will be no loan charges for DVDs or audiobooks.

“We know what a vital role our libraries play in the lives of some of our residents, especially those who are housebound or cut off from family and friends during this difficult period.

Reading in particular is a productive and stimulating way to fill time so I’m delighted that we are now able to offer this click and collect service, which allows an individual to borrow up to five books at any one time. Audiobooks and DVDs are also available to loan via this contactless system, with users able to view the library catalogue online.

We hope residents will find this new service helpful while the library buildings and other facilities remain closed.” - Cllr Lis Burnett, Cabinet Member for Education and Regeneration

How the process works

  1. Items can be requested remotely using the online catalogue. Library users who do not have access may place a request by phone or email.

  2. Once a confirmation email/phonecall has been received to say the items are ready for collection, customers will need to book a collection slot online.

When contacting the library by phone or email to request items, library members should provide their library card number, telephone number and/or an email address.

They may also submit book requests and preferences, such as a list of favourite authors, genres or specific titles. Library staff will then compile a selection of books for customers to collect at the selected time.

Click and Collect

Staff will do their best to meet requirements, but the coronavirus crisis has impacted the production and supply of new books and many of the most popular titles may still be on loan. For these reasons the library service is urging people to return their books as soon as possible.

When collecting items, a number of measures have been put in place for the safety of customers and staff.

  • Only one member of a household should return and collect items.

  • Items can only be collected during the allocated time slot to maintain social distancing by avoiding queues.

  • To reduce contact, items will be ready for collection from the main entrance of the library.

  • Items can only be collected from the main entrances – the library buildings and other facilities remain closed.

Please note: Recycling bags and containers will not be available from libraries during this time. Residents can order replacement reusable recycling bags or containers for delivery online or by calling 01446 700111.

There will be no access to computers or printing/photocopying facilities during this period.

The community libraries at Dinas Powys, Rhoose, St. Athan, Sully and Wenvoe remain closed for the time being.
