Free residents permits available as car parking charges to be introduced to town centres
Residents of selected streets are being encouraged to apply for free parking permits as the Vale of Glamorgan Council looks to manage the introduction of parking charges to two town centres on September 1.
The Council has written to those living in affected areas, explaining how permits can be obtained and why resident only parking zones are being implemented.
As detailed in the letter, permits are available by visiting the Council website or calling 01446 700111 and the zones are designed to protect residents from possible displacement parking.
They will help ensure visitors do not leave their cars on selected streets in Cowbridge when parking charges are introduced at the Town Hall Car park from September.
Charges are also being brought in at Wyndham Street in Barry, where residential controls are already in place on surrounding roads, at the same time.
However, charges will come into effect at both locations only if Wales moves to the new baseline alert level as part of Welsh Government’s ongoing reviews.
Last week the Council announced similar plans to introduce residents only parking zones in areas of Barry Island, the Knap, Cosmeston and Ogmore-by-Sea to combat other instances of displacement parking.
Enforcement of the residential parking zones will start from July 19, with the Cowbridge scheme subject to enforcement later in the month.
Cllr Peter King, Vale of Glamorgan Council Cabinet member for Neighbourhood services and Transport, said: “These measures will help protect local residents from displacement parking in our busiest coastal areas and in streets close to the Town Hall Car Park in Cowbridge. Charges are set to be introduced to that car park and Wyndham Street in Barry at the beginning of September.
“The charges are designed to better manage car parking in Cowbridge and Barry town centres. They should lead to an increased turnover of spaces, boosting local businesses. There continues to be free parking available in both these locations on and off-street.
“Residents are encouraged to apply for a permit for every vehicle registered to an address ahead of the introduction of these parking controls. They are free and each property is also entitled to one visitor permit.”
The Council is also introducing season tickets for regular visitors to our country parks and coastal resorts, which can also be purchased through the website.
These are priced at £50 for six months and £100 for 12 months for chargeable car parks in coastal areas, such as Barry Island and Ogmore-by-Sea.
They will cost £30 for six months and £50 for 12 months at Cosmeston and Porthkerry country parks.
The season tickets for coastal areas can be used in any chargeable coastal car park in the Vale and the country park season ticket can be used in either country park.
