Inspired by the challenges they faced during the coronavirus pandemic, the young people wrote and recorded their own vocals. They also produced a backing track and designed artwork for the CD cover, which has now been professionally duplicated.

The project is part of the youth service’s music workshop provision, which helps develop new instrumental, singing and music technology skills within a youth club environment.

This is part of the wider commitment to offering high quality provision and opportunities to young people as they transition to adulthood. The Youth Service aims to help young people achieve their potential through empowerment and participation in education initiatives that explore the issues affecting them.

The service has previously organised and performed a successful Christmas Showcase at Barry YMCA. This is where the sessions were originally based, however since Covid-19, they have since moved to Microsoft Teams.

Cabinet Member for Leisure, Arts and Culture and Young People’s Champion, Cllr Kathryn McCaffer said, “We are grateful to have such a dedicated Youth Service, who offer diverse and empowering opportunities for young people across the Vale.

“Young people have had a particularly challenging time over the past 12 months, with many confined to their bedrooms, unable to socialise and experiencing disruptions to their learning. Our youth service was quick to move to online provision and were invaluable in supporting young people through this period.

“The song they have produced is incredibly impressive and captures how many of us, both young and old, have felt throughout the pandemic.”

The song is available on YouTube - 2020 Wrapped Up

The Youth Service project takes place weekly on Wednesday evenings between 6pm and 7.30pm.

Young people must register to attend via the Youth Service membership. To sign up, or for more information on the Youth Service and the provision available, please visit their website.
