Unpaid carers in Wales will be eligible to receive a £500 payment in recognition of the pivotal role they have played during the pandemic.

The payment, administered by the Vale of Glamorgan Council, is part of a £29m investment in unpaid carers from the Welsh Government and recognises the financial and emotional hardship many have experienced. The payment will benefit thousands of the most vulnerable carers in

Wales.

The payment is being made after a survey found nearly half of all unpaid carers use their personal savings and give up work to care for others.

It is hoped that the payment will help to ease the pressures faced by unpaid carers as well as recognising the value of their caring role to Wales’ health and social care system.

Unpaid carers who are receiving Carer’s Allowance on March 31 this year will be eligible for the payment.

Lance Carver, Director of Social Services said: “We’re very proud of all our paid and unpaid carers here in the Vale and I hope this support payment from Welsh Government will help them during this difficult time as the cost of living rises.

“Over the last two years, unpaid carers have played a vital role in our community, often working long hours to provide unwavering care, with many and experiencing both financial and emotional hardship.”

If you believe you are eligible, you will be able to submit a claim by registering on the Council’s website from 9am on 16 May until 5pm on 15 July 2022.
