Cartref Porthceri receives excellent inspection report
A care home in Barry has been rated ‘good’ in every category following an assessment by Care Inspectorate Wales (CIW).
Cartref Porthceri on Salisbury Road in the town was visited by the independent regulator for child and adult social care on two occasions in July.
During those inspections, the care home was evaluated in four areas: Wellbeing, Care and support, Environment, and Leadership and Management.
In each section, care homes are rated either poor, in need of improvement, good or excellent.
Cartref Porthceri’s result means it is performing well across the board.
Cllr Eddie Williams, Vale of Glamorgan Council Cabinet member for Social Care and Health, said: “This inspection report comes on the back of another carried out at Ty Dyfan this summer, which also saw that home classified as ‘good’ in every area.
“I’d like to pay huge credit to the Cartref Porthceri staff following this outcome as it is down to their hard work and dedication.
“The commitment shown to the residents regularly sees the people that work in this home go above and beyond to provide the best care possible. Thank you very much for those efforts.
“As a Council, we have prioritised looking after the most vulnerable members of our communities, which is why about a third of our whole budget is spent on social care.”
The CIW report was highly complimentary of the service being offered by Cartref Porthceri.
In the section on wellbeing, inspectors noted: “Care staff know the people they support well and provide care with respect and compassion. People have the support they need to maintain their physical, mental, and emotional health and their needs are anticipated. People are involved in their care planning where possible and their likes, dislikes and preferences are included in personal plans of care.
Under the heading Care and Support, the report read: “People have a voice to make choices about their day-to-day care. We saw staff responding promptly to people’s needs throughout the visit. People are assisted in a timely manner with dignity and respect, and we saw people acknowledged and engaged to ensure their emotional needs and wishes were met. Care staff have a good understanding of people’s needs and engage with people positively. People spoke positively of care staff. Comments included, “Couldn’t ask for more really” and “Staff are very kind here, they are all very good.”
When assessing the environment, CIW found: “People can be assured they live in a safe environment. We found the service to be secure and that hazards have been reduced as practically possible, we saw no clutter and observed harmful chemicals stored appropriately as required. The home offers suitable accommodation for the residents, and the manager has shown a commitment to developing and improving it for their benefit.”
Finally, in the areas of Leadership and Management, the report states: “The manager and management team are visible and described by staff as “extremely supportive.” There are policies and procedures in place for the smooth running of the service and to guide staff of what is expected of them. People are provided with information about the service which includes how to complain if they are not happy. A statement of purpose (SOP) is available which reflects the service’s vision. Management oversees staff training and supervision needs. The management team work with external agencies and notify the Regulator in a timely manner.”
