A BOO-st for Barry: Spooktacular Events Bring Former Wilko Building to Life This Halloween
A packed programme of community events, family activities, creative markets and Halloween fun is coming to the former Wilko building in Barry, as the Vale of Glamorgan Council continues to bring the town-centre space to life while developing its long-term future.
Residents and visitors are invited to discover a host of exciting activities at the former Wilko building on Holton Road over the coming weeks and months, with everything from pre-loved book bargains and hands-on creative sessions to spooky storytelling and Halloween markets.
The programme reflects the Council’s commitment to making the building a welcoming and valuable space for the community while work continues towards its permanent future as an indoor market.
The long-term plans were shaped by extensive public consultation following the Council’s acquisition of the building, with residents helping to determine how the space should be used to best meet local needs and aspirations.
Alongside the upcoming seasonal events, the successful programme of arts and crafts fairs will continue, giving independent makers and small businesses the opportunity to showcase and sell their products through a pop-up market.
Cllr Bronwen Brooks, Cabinet Member for Sustainable Places, said: “The former Wilko building has enormous potential, and it is fantastic to see it being used to bring people together, support local businesses and create new experiences for residents and visitors to Barry.
“Our plans for a permanent indoor market were developed following extensive consultation with the public. We listened to what people wanted from this building, and we are working towards a future that reflects those ambitions.
“While that work progresses, it is important that the building continues to serve the community. Our programme of meanwhile uses is helping us do just that, providing a home for creative businesses, family activities and exciting events that bring life and footfall to Holton Road.
“From our regular arts and crafts fairs to the fantastic range of Halloween activities planned, there is something for people of different ages and interests to enjoy. I would encourage everyone to come along, support the events, discover local talent and see how this space is already making a positive contribution to Barry.”
