Complementary Therapies pupils from Cardiff and Vale College have been visiting Cartref PorthceriCentenarians 2 Residential Home, where they provide a range of therapeutic treatments such as hand and foot massages.

Prior to this, many of the Cartref residents- including Mary Bobbett (aged 100) and Beryl Yeandle- had never enjoyed a professional pampering session.

Whilst the ladies were able to sit back and enjoy the relaxing visit, the Level 3 students were able to practise and refine their skills in what they describe as a highly rewarding setting.

Leanne Pile, a student at the College said: “It was so lovely. The staff and residents were wonderful, they made us feel so welcome and made sure we were comfortable by offering us tea, coffee and water.

“We met some truly inspiring people, one being a lady named Beryl who turned 102 and is still loving life… and her daily G&T's! I couldn't have wished for a better placement!”

Another student, Joanne Strevens said: “What a wonderful care home. All the residents seem to be very happy and there is a lovely atmosphere there.”

Centenarians 3Staff at Cartref Porthceri have expressed their gratitude to the College and the students, and, in particular, have praised the positive effect of the treatments on the wellbeing of residents.

Marijke Jenkins, Operational Manager of the Vale of Glamorgan Residential Services, said: “We are so pleased that both students and residents enjoyed the experience.

“People are never too old to enjoy new experiences, and these can be mutually beneficial for all members of the community, and encourage them to thrive in their own way.”
