The Vale of Glamorgan Council is soon to undertake work to restore Penarth Library’s interior, as well as improving the quality of facilities on offer.

Changes to the library’s first floor will include replacing water-damaged carpets and wall plaster, as well as repainting the walls. The area will be reshaped to improve its study facilities, and new furniture and shelving will be introduced.

Essential maintenance is also due to be carried out during the refurbishment, including the creation of an exit onto the roof so that gutter may be cleared and inspected regularly.

This is following a recent drone investigation which revealed that gutters overwhelmed with debris were the cause of significant water damage to the library’s interior.

The work is part of a larger scheme to refurbish the library, which will see around £30,000 invested into the project. This will be carried out later this year.

Director of Learning and Skills, Paula Ham said: “This is the beginning of a necessary upgrade for Penarth Library.

“The library provides residents, both young and old, with a number of valuable facilities. We hope that the refurbishment will improve the overall ambiance and inclusivity of the space, and encourage residents to continue to make the most of it.”

The work will take place between Tuesday 7 May and Saturday 25 May, seeing the temporary closure of the first floor. During this time the area and book stock will be inaccessible to staff and users.

Users are reminded that a small collection of books from the first floor will be moved to the ground floor, and that they will still have access to all the resources and stock of other Vale libraries.
