The evening aimed to provide veterans with a distraction from the Bonfire night fireworks, which can be stressful, especially for those suffering with PTSD or anxiety disorders.

The Veteran Advice Service and Barry Memo co-hosted the event, a screening of Robin Hood : Men in Tights. Free tea, coffee and snacks were provided. Display tables from the RAF and British Royal Legion were also in place to provide additional information on the support available to veterans.

John, a veteran who attended the event with his family, praised the service’s good work :

“A good evening had by everyone, my grandson was also comfortable with the atmosphere and enjoyed a good chuckle at the film along with everyone. Well done all,” he said.

The VAS provides free, impartial and dedicated information, advice and support to Members of the Armed Forces currently serving or who have served within the Vale of Glamorgan. The event was the first of its kind, with the hope that more will follow.

It is estimated that up to 10% of veterans suffer with a mental health condition such as PSTD. Noises, flashes and even smells can trigger a startle response in those living with the condition.
