Vale of Glamorgan Council marks VJ Day
The Vale of Glamorgan Council will mark the 75th anniversary of Victory over Japan Day by flying the Armed Forces flag outside the Civic Offices in Barry.
VJ Day came three months after VE day and signified the surrender of Japan and the end of the Second World War.
Unfortunately, restrictions in place to control the spread of coronavirus, mean that a public ceremony will not be possible for this occasion on Saturday.
But the Royal British Legion have organised a number of activities to help people recognise these often-overlooked event.
At www.britishlegion.org.uk it is possible to share stories and messages of thanks on an interactive map, to help ensure the contribution of those who served in the Far East is not forgotten.
It is also possible to download and use activity packs from the website that have been developed by the National Memorial Arboretum in partnership with the Legion.
Designed for all ages, the packs provide an overview of the Second World War in the Asia-Pacific region and the people who served in challenging conditions.
There will also be a national two-minute silence at 11am, the focal point of the commemorative service that will be broadcast live on BBC One.
Cllr Eddie Williams, Vale of Glamorgan Council Armed Forces Champion, said: “Despite these difficult times, it is important we still take the opportunity to honour our Armed Forces. Those who make up our Services give everything to protect this Country, allowing us the many freedoms we all enjoy.
“It is particularly important we mark VJ day as the conflict and the brave efforts of those who served there are often forgotten.
“Though it is not possible to come together to mark this occasion, I would encourage everyone to find time to show their support for this event in some way. There are a range of ways this can be done virtually by visiting the Armed Forces’ social media channels.”
