Car parks at Harbour Road and Nell’s Point on Barry Island will benefit from the system as well as Rivermouth and Brig Y Don in Ogmore and Cymlau in Southerndown.

Using a specially-designed app, created by PayByPhone, users can purchase parking reliably and quickly from their mobile phone.

Visitors paying for parking in this way will also notice a reduction in the cost compared to using the Council’s previous cashless payment method.

The more flexible software means customers can start or extend their period of parking at the touch of a button.

The app, which can be downloaded from www.paybyphone.co.uk, Google Play and Apple App Store, also includes a maps feature that allows drivers to locate parking before they leave for their destination.

Drivers can pin their vehicle location onto the map once they have parked and the nearby parking feature instantly provides the closest PayByPhone parking location number.

The new system goes live on Thursday, October 8 and could be introduced to other car parks around the Vale in the future.

Cllr Peter King, Vale of Glamorgan Council Cabinet Member for Neighbourhood Services and Transport, said: “I know that some users have previously experienced problems when trying to pay for car parking using their mobile phones.

“We hope this new system operated by PayByPhone will offer a simple, reliable way to purchase parking in this manner. It should be cheaper and more user-friendly than the previous mobile phone service.

“A contactless system like this is particularly beneficial at this time as it will also help prevent the spread of Covid-19.”
