Public invited to have their say on specialist education proposal

The Vale of Glamorgan Council is welcoming questions and comments on the recent proposal to transform specialist education in the Vale.

    Vale of Glamorgan

The strategy was approved last July and aims to better meet the needs of the county’s most vulnerable learners, as well as meet projected future demand.

The strategy identified three key targets:

  • Establish a new Centre for Learning and Wellbeing (CL&W) to replace Y Daith, the Council’s existing pupil referral unit (PRU);
  • Establish specialist resource bases (SRB) in mainstream schools to ensure learners can access mainstream education;
  • Increase the capacity of the Council’s special school, Ysgol y Deri (YYD) to meet future demand.

The strategy will be progressed through three separate consultation exercises. The first consultation focusses on the creation of a new CL&W and a SRB at Gladstone Primary School which would form part of Ysgol y Deri. This new provision would adopt a trauma informed approach to support learners with complex social, emotional and mental health needs. The consultation will run from Monday, 07 September 2020 to Sunday 18 October 2020.

The proposal would see a £4.4m investment to construct the new CL&W on the Court Road Depot site in Barry. All staff and pupils of the newly established CL&W would transfer to the new building by January 2023.

Deputy Leader of the Council and Cabinet Member for Regeneration and Education, Cllr Lis Burnett said:

“It is fantastic to see further investment in the future of special education in the Vale of Glamorgan. We have a proven track record for delivering 21st Century school buildings that are not only fit for current purpose but also for future generations.

“The project will help streamline the current systems, as well as provide more modern facilities to better meet the needs of our pupils.

“This consultation gives the public the opportunity to ask questions and make comments that will be considered when the Council’s Cabinet decides how to proceed.”
