Art Central LogoOne of the most established artist groups in Wales, The Welsh Group is an artist collective that has been giving a voice to the visual arts in Wales for more than 70 years.

They currently have around 40 active artist members, who are amongst the most well-known and respected visual arts practitioners in Wales.

The artists are primarily painters and sculptors, whose work demonstrates a cross section of approaches in contemporary visual arts practice through a wide range of media and processes.

They have exhibited widely as a group, both in Wales and internationally, and celebrated several significant milestones.

Their recent 70th anniversary celebration was marked with a publication by David Moore exploring the works of the current artists and highlighting the group’s history.

A number of the artists are resident in the Vale of Glamorgan, including Alan Salisbury, Professor Gerda Roper, Kay Keogh, Ivor Davies, Mary Husted, Shirley Anne Owen and Angela Kingston. Others have lived in the area or are resident and working across Wales.

Cllr Kathryn McCaffer, Vale of Glamorgan Council Cabinet member for Leisure, Arts and Culture, said: “We are delighted to be hosting The Welsh Group | Y Grwp Cymreig artists, particularly as many are resident in Wales and some in the Vale of Glamorgan.  It is an excellent opportunity for schools, residents and visitors to see some of the incredible work created by these artists right on their doorstep.”

The Welsh Group chair, Sue Hiley Harris, said: “The group are very pleased to exhibit at Art Central Gallery, Barry. It is a fantastic opportunity for each member to show a selection of their works in such a fabulous space.”

Founded in 1948, the South Wales Group as it was then known, consisted of both professional and amateur artists from six leading South Wales art societies.

By 1975 it had radically changed, becoming a professional artist collective and was renamed as the Welsh Group | Y Grwp Cymreig.

The exhibition will open on Saturday, October 9 and run until Saturday, January 8.

Gallery Opening times are Monday to Friday 9:30am to 4:30pm and Saturday 9:30am to 3:30pm.
