National Play day at Romilly ParkNational Play Day was celebrated on 03 August across the UK. The day aims to highlight the important role that play has on children and young people’s physical health, mental health, and relationships.

In line with this years’ theme of ‘All to play for – building play opportunities for all children’, the Vale’s Sports and Play team partnered with the Vale Youth Service, Flying Start Team, Family Information Service, Vale Parenting Service, Vale Libraries and Adult Learning Team to deliver a day packed with inclusive, fun activities for all to enjoy.

On offer were a variety of play opportunities including arts, crafts, sports and sensory activities.

The day is just one of many free activities available for young people this summer. After proving popular in previous years, the Vale of Glamorgan Council has partnered with a range of community organisations to create a Summer Of Fun programme.

The scheme is funded by Welsh Government and aims to support the wellbeing of children and young people to continue their recovery from the Covid restrictions of the last two years, with the added benefit of supporting families with the costs of activities over the summer holidays.

Summer Of Fun will run until 30 September and offers a range of free activities, suitable for children and young people aged up to 25.

Cllr Gwyn John, Cabinet Member for Leisure, Sport and Well-being, said: “The day was a great success, and it was fantastic to see so many children and young people engaging with the activities and enjoying themselves.

“Following the challenges children and young people have faced during recent years due to the Covid-19 pandemic, play is more important than ever.

“Well done to everyone involved!”
