Vale of Glamorgan Council unveils new political leadership

Cllr Lis Burnett heads up a new-look Vale of Glamorgan Council Cabinet after being confirmed as the Authority’s new Leader.

She was voted in as part of an eight-person political executive at the Annual Meeting on Monday.


The Cabinet is made up of five women and three men, with Cllr Burnett, Deputy Leader Bronwen Brooks, Rhiannon Birch, Mark Wilson, Margaret Wilkinson and Ruba Sivagnanam coming from Labour and Gwyn John and Eddie Williams representing the Llantwit First Group.

 

Burnett, Lis“I’m delighted to have been elected the new Leader of the Vale of Glamorgan Council,” said Cllr Burnett.


“This is an exciting time as we look to press ahead with delivering our ambitious manifesto which includes big infrastructure projects alongside a commitment to regeneration and our Project Zero initiative to become carbon neutral.


“The new Cabinet reflects my desire for better gender balance and diversity not just in politics but all positions of power.


“It is important that an area’s political leadership properly represents the people it serves and that will be a key consideration moving forwards.

 

“Much has been achieved in the Vale over recent years, but there is still a lot more to do.


“Public participation will be central to future change, with residents being actively involved in the decisions that affect them.”


Cllr Burnett steps up from the role of Deputy Leader, which she held under last term’s Labour/Llantwit First/Vale Independents coalition administration, with Cllrs Williams and Wilkinson also being retained from that Cabinet.

Her portfolio is titled Performance and Resources and covers areas such as Financial Services, Digital Transformation and Strategic Regeneration, while Deputy Leader Cllr Brooks has been named Cabinet Member for Sustainable Places.


Cllr Birch is responsible for Education, Arts and the Welsh Language, Cllr Wilkinson’s portfolio will be Public Sector Housing and Tenant Engagement and Cllr Wilson’s will have responsibility for Neighbourhood and Building Services.


Cllr Williams is Cabinet Member for Social Care and Health, while Ruba Sivagnanam is in charge of Community Engagement, Equalities and Regulatory services.


The Portfolio for Leisure Sport and Wellbeing will be managed by Cllr John.
