The Vale of Glamorgan Council is asking people to share their Windrush connections and stories.

To commemorate the 75th anniversary of Windrush in 2023, the Council is creating a digital record of stories and photographs from residents throughout the Vale of Glamorgan.

Windrush Day seeks to honour the men and women who first docked at Tilbury in the Empire Windrush ship in 1948.  Over 800 of the passengers came from the Caribbean but there were others from India, Pakistan, Kenya, and South Africa.

These weren’t the first people of colour to come to Britain, but they heralded the generation of people who came from the commonwealth to Britain in the 50s, 60s and 70s to answer the call of successive governments to help rebuild Britain after the second world war.

The Council would like to launch the project 'Stories of the Windrush Generation in the Vale of Glamorgan' and want to hear the voices of those who travelled to the UK from the Commonwealth and settled in Wales (before and after 1948).

Through these stories, the Council want to celebrate the contributions and the invaluable legacy of the Windrush generation to all aspects of British life.

Councillor Ruba Sivagnanam, Cabinet Member for Community Engagement, Equalities and Regulatory Services said: “This is a fantastic project that aims to celebrate and highlight the contributions made by those of the Windrush generation, not only our essential industries and the NHS but also to our arts and culture.

“We strongly encourage people to submit their stories about their experiences and challenges. It’s important to ensure that all voices are heard.”
