Council secures transport funding
The Vale of Glamorgan Council has secured funding for transport schemes that will boost health and wellbeing, benefit the environment and improve street safety.
Nearly £2.5 million from Welsh Government awarded via the Cardiff Capital Region, will be spent on a variety of projects across the County.
The funding will include construction of a walking, wheeling and cycling route through Parc Bryn y Don alongside Cardiff Road to connect Barry to Dinas Powys.
Average speed cameras will be installed through St Nicholas and Bonvilston to improve road safety in these areas.
Alongside this, a full review of the A48 is being undertaken to determine whether additional cameras are needed in other locations.
There will be continued public transport infrastructure improvements, including electronic displays with real time information at bus stops.
The funding will also help children travel to school on foot or by bike, pay for improvements to existing infrastructure and better signage and facilities for cyclists.
Cllr Bronwen Brooks, Vale of Glamorgan Council Cabinet Member for Sustainable Places, said: “I’m delighted we have been successful in gaining this money from Welsh Government which will support key transport initiatives.
“They will help people choose active forms of travel, improving both physical and mental health.
“Establishing walking and cycling routes and improving public transport infrastructure can also help reduce pollution, reflecting the Council’s Project Zero commitment to become carbon neutral by 2030.
“Alongside this, there will also be a number of other measures to improve highway safety, particularly streets around schools, and work to make cycling more practical and accessible.”
