QR codes fitted to bins will allow members of the public to quickly report a bin that needs emptying using their mobile phone.

Each bin will have its own unique code, so when someone scans it, a report will be sent directly to the Council, helping teams identify which bin needs to be emptied sooner.

QR Code on Bin - PenarthThe scheme aims to make reporting overflowing bins quicker and simpler, helping the Council respond to issues and maintain cleaner, more welcoming public spaces.

Cllr Mark Wilson, Cabinet Member for Neighbourhood and Building Services, said: “We want our town centres to be clean, welcoming places for residents, businesses and visitors. We know that overflowing litter bins can be frustrating, and this new scheme gives people a quick and easy way to let us know when a bin needs emptying.

“By giving each bin its own QR code, we can receive more precise reports and help our teams identify where attention is needed. We’re also continuing to improve recycling facilities across the Vale, and this is another practical step towards keeping our public spaces looking their best.

“We’d encourage residents and visitors to use the QR codes if they spot a full bin. If a bin is already overflowing, we’d also ask people to take any litter they have with them until they can find another bin, or take it home for disposal, rather than adding to the overflow. By working together, we can all help keep our towns tidy.”

The scheme was initially introduced in Penarth, and has since been rolled out more widely across Barry, Llantwit Major and Cowbridge as part of the Council’s ongoing work to maintain clean and attractive town centres across the Vale of Glamorgan.
