What is Child Sexual Exploitation (CSE)?

CSE is a form of child sexual abuse where an individual or group takes advantage of an imbalance of power to coerce, manipulate, or deceive a child or young person under 18 into sexual activity. This may be in exchange for something the child needs or wants, or for the financial or social gain of the perpetrator.

 

Legal Context

  • Age of consent in the UK: 16 years old.
  • Illegal to:
    • Engage in sexual activity with anyone under 16.
    • Take, share, or possess indecent images of children.
    • Engage in sexual activity with someone under 18 if in a position of trust.

Signs of Grooming or Exploitation

  • Going missing or staying out late
  • Unexplained gifts or money
  • Health issues (e.g., STIs)
  • Mood swings or substance use
  • Inappropriate sexual behaviour or dress
  • Physical injuries (e.g., bruises, burns)

  • Explain safe vs. unsafe secrets

  • Promote self-respect and assertiveness

Who Are the Perpetrators?
