Implementation of the Serious Violence Duty in the Vale of Glamorgan
The Serious Violence Duty began in January 2023 under the Police, Crime, Sentencing and Courts Act 2022.
It requires certain authorities to work together to reduce serious violence in local communities.
This Duty calls for a multi-agency approach, involving the police, local authorities, health services, and other relevant organisations. These partners must share information and coordinate actions to effectively prevent serious violence.
Addressing serious violence is a top priority for the Vale of Glamorgan’s Community Safety Partnership. We are dedicated to working with children, families, and communities to create a cultural shift. We believe that violence is preventable, not inevitable.
To support this goal, we have set up a Serious Violence Board. This Board will report to the Community Safety Partnership, ensuring clear oversight and accountability.
It is vital to maintain strong connections with other strategic partnerships, like the YJESS Management Board and Safeguarding Boards, to enhance impact through shared resources and intelligence.
We are developing an evidence-based violence profile using various partnership data sets. This profile will help us understand the types, locations, timings, and individuals involved in violent incidents across the Vale of Glamorgan.
Once this evidence base is ready, we will form targeted multi-agency subgroups to analyse the data and drive improvements. Initial findings indicate that youth violence in educational settings will be a key focus area.
