Exercise Referral Scheme

The national ‘Exercise Referral Scheme’ is a 16 week exercise programme.

It helps people who suffer with health problems in the Vale of Glamorgan, more active! Physical activity helps many health conditions.

Public Health Wales fund the scheme across Wales.  It aims to help people with medical conditions referred to improve activity levels.

Interested in a referral?

Just speak to your GP, practice nurse, physiotherapist or dietician. They can complete the necessary paperwork and send it to us to get you on to the scheme. The scheme is open to anyone aged over 16.

Cases that may lead to referral include:

  • Physical Inactivity

  • Risk of heart disease/recovered from heart disease

  • Osteoporosis

  • Diabetes

  • Mental Health

  • Weight Management

  • Cancer

The programme is very popular and there is a short wait for access.  If you are waiting to get on to the referral scheme here are some simple things you can do to help improve your health.  Take short walks.  Perhaps start with a short walk after meals?  Start with 5minute walks and add 1 or 2 minutes a week.  This will help you achieve your steps and simple movement is the key to staying active!

The Vale’s exercise referral professionals provide a range of activities to help participants become active over a 16-week period.  Scheme users are able to use the Vale’s leisure centres at a discounted rate. The current price for sessions at the Vale of Glamorgan's leisure centres is £2.50.

Instructed sessions take place Monday to Friday, but if you want more flexibility speak to the instructors about getting a gym programme written up so that you can improve your fitness when you have availability.

The minimum number of sessions that you are expected to do whilst on the scheme is 2 per week.  You can do more, but if you do less you will struggle to hit your goals and may not be doing enough physical activity to benefit your health.

Targets are set, progress is monitored, and at the end of the 16 weeks, the exercise referral professionals discuss how you can continue to achieve your goals by making activity a key part of day to day life.
