CCTV

CCTV stands for closed-circuit television. The CCTV cameras are monitored 24/7 at Cardiff Council’s control room. 

 

The purpose of the CCTV system is for; 

 

  • Deterring crime and anti-social behaviour and assisting in the detection of crime and anti-social behaviour incidents 
  • Reducing the fear of crime and anti-social behaviour 
  • Improving the safety and security of residents, visitors and the business community who use the facilities covered by the CCTV scheme or visit the areas in the Vale covered by the CCTV scheme.  
  • Assisting the emergency services in the location of Missing Vulnerable persons. 
  • Deterring crime and assist in the detection of criminal offences 
  • Assisting the Council in deterring and detecting incidents of fly tipping and other enforcmenet related activity across the Vale.

CCTV Camera Locations

 

Deployable CCTV cameras 

The Vale of Glamorgan council have deployable CCTV cameras.  These cameras are movable surveillance units designed for rapid installation and ease of relocation, allowing users to respond to temporary or changing monitoring requirements.   

 

CCTV Operational Group 

The CCTV work is overseen by the CCTV Operational Group that was established in 2023. This group is responsible for ensuring that information sharing, evidence gathering and sharing and the direction and development of CCTV is both functional and effective. 

 

  • Your Rights
    You have a right to access and obtain a copy of the personal data that the Council holds about you and to ask the Authority to correct your personal data if there are any errors or it is out of date. In some circumstances you may also have a right to ask the Council to restrict the processing of your personal data until any errors are corrected, to object to processing or to transfer or (in very limited circumstances) erase your personal data.

Requesting CCTV footage 

​​​​​​​​​You can make a request for CCTV for a variety of reasons. This can be done by: 

  • a member of the public, 

  • the police, or  

  • a company representing a member of the public. For example, insurance companies or solicitors.  

How long we keep CCTV footage 

We do not keep footage for longer than 31 days. The footage is automatically deleted once the 31 days have passed, unless we have received a formal request for the footage, or it is relevant to an ongoing investigation.  

 

We do not own all CCTV cameras in The Vale of Glamorgan. We may not always have access to the footage. 

 

What information you need to provide 

We will not search for the footage unless the relevant documents have been provided.  

You will also need to provide as much information as possible, such as:  

  • the specific time and date, 

  • the location, and 

  • a description of yourself and the incident. 

  • Requesting footage of yourself
    You have the right to ask for CCTV footage of yourself.  You can do this in writing or verbally. There may be circumstances where we cannot give you the footage. For example, if other individuals are identifiable in the footage.  

     

    How to make a request

    You can ask for CCTV footage by completing the CCTV request form and sending it to us.  

     

  • Requesting footage on behalf of someone else  
    You have the right to ask for CCTV footage on behalf of someone else. You must have consent and proof of identification from the person (the data subject).  

     

    You can make the request in writing or verbally. There may be circumstances where we cannot give you with the footage. For example, if other individuals are identifiable in the footage.

  • Requesting footage for legal proceedings  

    Insurance companies and solicitors can ask for footage on behalf of the client they are representing. You must have consent and proof of identification from the client (the data subject).

  • Requesting footage under the Data Protection Act 2018  

    The police can ask for CCTV footage under Schedule 2, Part 1 of Paragraph 2 for:

    • the prevention or detection of crime,  

    • the apprehension of prosecution of offenders,  

    • the assessment or collection of any tax or duty, or 

    • of any imposition of a similar nature.
